    Alsatian Dog Breed Information

    Description:

German Shepherds are medium to large dogs. The average breed height at the withers is 60–65 cm (24–26 in) for males and 55–60 cm (22–24 in) for females.German Shepherds are longer compared to their height, with an acceptable ratio of 10 to 8 1/2. A standard weight range is not set by the AKC as an official breed standard.

They've got a domed head, a long square-cut muzzle with strong jaws and a black nose. The eyes are brown and medium sized. The ears are wide and straight, extended at the front and perpendicular, but during movement they are often pulled back.

A German Shepherd has a long neck, which when running at a fast pace is lifted when excited and lowered when it moves in a fast pace. The tail is bushy, touching the hock.

German Shepherds have a lightweight and thick double coat with a thin undercoat. In two variants, the coat is accepted; medium and long. The gene for long hair is recessive, making the variation of long hair rarer.

German Shepherds are most often either tan / black or red / black. Some color variants have black masks and black body markings that can vary from a traditional "saddle" to a "blanket" overall. Rarer color variations include sand, pure-black, pure-white, liver, gold, red, and panda.

According to most standards, the all-black and sable varieties are acceptable; however, the blue and liver are considered to be significant faults and the Full-white is the cause for immediate disqualification from Taking part in all the dog breed shows.

    Temperament:

German Shepherds are moderately active dogs and are described as self-assured as stated by the breed standards. The breed is distinguished by a willingness to learn and a willingness to have a mission. They are curious, making them perfect for search missions and excellent guard dogs.

They may become over-protective of their family and property, especially if not properly socialized. They are not likely to become immediate friends with strangers. German Shepherds are highly intelligent and loyal, as well as a good guard dog.

    Health Problems:

Over the years, indiscriminate breeding practices have led to hereditary diseases such as dysplasia of the hip and elbow, blood disorders, digestive problems (probably due to nerves), autism, chronic eczema, keratitis (corneal inflammation), dwarfism and allergies to fleas.

It is imperative that you work with breeders of the highest standards in order to escape these conditions which means you can enjoy peace of mind with your shepherd and enjoy a full and productive life.

Some of the common disorders among Alsatian shepherd dogs are:

    1) Hip Dysplasia
    2) Elbow Dysplasia
    3) Skin Problems
    4) Cherry Eye
    5) Bloat

    1) Hip Dysplasia:

Hip dysplasia is the result of hip joint's malformation. This disease is a common problem in most large breeds of dogs and is affected both genetically and environmentally.

Make sure the parents of any German Shepherd Dog puppy you consider buying are verified to be free from Hip Dysplasia by OFA, OVC or Penn Hip.

Overfeeding, exercise and illness when your pup is young can also cause damage to your puppy's hips

    2) Elbow Dysplasia:

Elbow Dysplasia is an elbow joint developmental disorder of the bones. The condition is generally accepted in nature as hereditary and can occur at various severity rates.

Unlike Hip Dysplasia, before mating, both parents should be recognized as free from Elbow Dysplasia.

    3) Skin Problems:

Dogs react to skin problems as opposed to people who react to allergens with nasal symptoms. Such problems can vary from poor texture and length of the fur to scratching and chewing, hot spots and self-mutilation.

Allergies can also play a role in infections with chronic eyes. Thyroid disease can also add to the problem and make things more difficult to diagnose and treat.

    4) Cherry Eye:

Occasionally the tear gland which typically occupies the third eyelid's base gets inflated and protrudes beyond the third eyelid's leading edge. This protrusion appears as a dark, circular red mass.

    5) Bloat:

Bloat is a disorder in which the belly of a dog develops unnecessary gas and expands significantly enough without immediate treatment to cause death.

    Living Conditions:

In many living conditions, the Alsatian adapts well. It doesn't take much space for this breed. They don't like extreme heat & they have thick double coats.

Be careful to keep these dogs safe, giving them plenty of water and shade in hot environments.

    General Appearance of this breed:

    Height: 24 to 28 inches
    Weight: 34 to 55 Kg
    Lifespan: 9 to 13 years

Should you opt for this breed?

Please remember the 11 points below before you make a decision of selecting this breed.

    1) They are not Golden Retrievers

Your shepherd will not befriend every person he/she meets which is the part of their heritage. This breed is suspicious of strangers.

Be ready for your shepherd to choose someone in your family to be Their person.

Guion barely exists in her universe.) It may be saddening, but it's this breeds trait.

    2) Land Sharks

German Shepherd Puppies are mouthy breed therefore gained the nickname "land shark." It comes from somewhere deep inside their heritage, I suppose, but these are puppies that are very snappy!

A GSD can therefore be a tried-and-tested dog for young children, who often become willing targets for playful biting.

Start teaching your puppy right away that biting humans is inappropriate behavior and channel it into heavy-duty chewing toys and games that do not require tasty human hands.

    3) Beware of signs of shyness

Some German Shepherds tend towards shyness and anxiety, particularly American-line dogs bred for show / companionship. This shyness can be turned into fear-based violence if not addressed quickly.

That's why socialize that puppy as soon as he comes home, and don't stop all his life.

    4) They will follow you everywhere

If you don't like to have a dog follow you everywhere, even in the shower, you might think twice about getting a German Shepherd.

These dogs are busybodies and will always be curious to know where you are and what you are doing all the times...They are just doing their jobs :)

    5) Hairs everywhere

There's a reason why people call them "Greek shedders." German Shepherds have a double coat that is twice as big as the entire floor, couch, shoes, etc.

You can't win with your wardrobe as well; when you end up with a classic German black-and-tan dog, they have black, brown, yellow and sometimes white hair on them, so no clothing color is exempt!

    6) They like to play rough

Shepherds have a tendency with both people and other dogs to be rough-house. they are breed that are strong! They don't have the retrievers ' "soft bite" or the smaller breeds ' delicate playfulness.

Dog owners with other breeds told me it took them a while to know that the gsd were playing with their dogs and not trying to kill them :D

Shepherds like to go for the throat in my experience, even in playful mood, and get into some heavy-duty wrestling. Track their interactions with other dogs and have your shepherd take lots of breaks and time-outs so the game doesn't get too stressful.

    7) Negative Reactions

German Shepherd has not exactly the best public image, due to the media, history, popular culture, and certainly many mishandled dogs. If it hurts your feelings that some people fear your dog immediately, a German Shepherd might not be right for you.

Let this inspire you if you have a German Shepherd to make your pet a great race ambassador and help change negative stereotypes.

    8) Vocal Dog

GSDs appear to be vocal as well. We had some dogs who were just whiners; for a variety of reasons they whined (excitement, unbridled joy, pressure, attention, food). Some barked a lot when other dogs moved across the fence or some stranger passed by!

    9) Health issues

German shepherds are known for their health-related issues. Shepherds seem to have them all, ranging from more benign (allergies) to life-threatening (osteosarcoma, hemangioma).

The breed even has predispositions to diseases that tend to happen solely within the purebred line (e.g., degenerative myelopathy, once called "German shepherd neuropathy") It's sad, but if you want a shepherd, it's a fact.

Find a good vet (preferably one with a shepherd's experience) and take steps to keep your shepherd in good condition and safe.

    10) Keeping the puppy engaged

Otherwise, you'll have a little bit of terror on your side. Large, friendly, competitive, and highly intelligent dogs are German Shepherds. If they get bored you will seriously regret bringing this furry monster in the house.

A smart dog that has no work to do = a whirlwind that causes havoc. Take lessons in obedience, agility, flyball, defensive dog, herding, nose work, etc.

In many canine sports and activities, shepherds will excel! Continue brainstorming now on how to continue stimulating the brain of your German Shepherd Puppy.
